If you’re looking into baby classes, you may have come across baby massage and baby reflexology and wondered what the difference is.
Both involve gentle, nurturing touch and can be a lovely way to spend time with your baby, but they use different techniques.
With World Reflexology Week taking place this week, we thought it was the perfect time to take a closer look at both.
What is baby massage?
Baby massage is a gentle massage routine designed specifically for babies, using simple strokes and movements across different areas of the body to soothe and support various common baby ailments.
At Basking Babies, our classes teach parents a comprehensive baby massage routine that you can continue to enjoy at home. But baby massage isn't just about learning the techniques - it's also about slowing down, spending some special one-to-one time with your baby and learning to recognise their cues.
Sometimes your baby will be happy to join in. Other times they might be hungry, tired or simply not in the mood, and that's absolutely fine!

What is baby reflexology?
Baby reflexology focuses primarily on your baby's feet.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the theory that particular points on the feet correspond with different areas of the body. By working those points during reflexology routines, we can support things like digestive discomfort, coughs and colds, and teething. For babies, the techniques are adapted to be particularly gentle and the routines short.
At Basking Babies, we teach specially designed baby reflexology treatments as part of our Nurture Me courses, giving parents simple techniques to learn and enjoy.

So, what's the difference?
Baby massage involves gentle massage techniques across your baby's body. Baby reflexology focuses on specific techniques applied to your baby's feet.
Both can provide an opportunity to:
- Spend quality time together
- Enjoy nurturing touch
- Learn to recognise your baby's cues
- Build confidence as a parent
- Create special moments of connection
- Soothe common baby ailments
They complement each other beautifully. Our Nurture Me Complete: Baby Massage & Baby Reflexology course combines our comprehensive baby massage routine, Colic Combat and our specially designed baby reflexology treatments.
This means you can learn techniques for both your baby's body and those gorgeous little feet.
What if my baby doesn't want to take part?
This is one of the most important things we teach: your baby is in charge.
Your baby might be hungry, tired, need a cuddle or simply not want to be touched that day. That's completely normal.
There's no pressure to complete every technique. Sometimes you might massage for a few minutes, sometimes you'll stop and have a cuddle, and sometimes you'll simply watch.
It's all part of learning to understand and respond to your baby's cues.
