Have you ever been told that it’s "normal" for babies to be sick, or that reflux is something they’ll simply "grow out of"? We caught up with Emma – The Reflux Tummy Mummy – to find out more about reflux in babies.
For many parents, the reassurance that their baby will grow out of reflux can feel dismissive—especially when their baby seems to be in pain or discomfort. The truth is, reflux is never normal. No baby should have to endure pain, frequent vomiting, or the distress and pain of silent reflux. Reflux and silent reflux are symptoms, and understanding the cause is essential to finding effective relief.
Myth 1: Babies will "grow out of it"
Parents are often told that reflux is a phase, it’s normal and will stop on its own. While some symptoms may appear to improve as babies grow, they may develop others and this approach leaves many parents struggling without proper support. Frequent vomiting, discomfort, and crying are signals that something is not right. It’s vital to address the root causes rather than simply hoping symptoms will disappear.
Myth 2: Going to your GP is the best place to start
Many parents are told to "wait it out" or prescribed a reflux suppressant medicine like Gaviscon. This NEVER addresses the cause of reflux and in most babies comes with side effects, like constipation and abdominal discomfort. Parents should not have to choose if they would prefer their baby to be being sick or have constipation.
If you keep pushing for help, you may be prescribed Omeprazole. This also doesn't address the cause or action of reflux (I have a video available covering Omeprazole in much more detail). While these treatments may mask symptoms, they often fail to address the real problem—why the reflux is happening in the first place.
My role as an Infant Reflux Specialist is to listen to your concerns about your baby and ask questions to uncover every tiny detail to help build up a picture of what is going on for your baby. My holistic approach means every aspect of your baby and their little life so far has been sorted with a fine-tooth comb!
Myth 3: Colic and reflux are the same thing
Colic and reflux are often confused, but they are different. Colic involves excessive crying without a known cause, while reflux involves stomach contents traveling back up the oesophagus. Silent reflux occurs without visible spit-up, making it harder to recognise. Understanding these differences can help you find the root cause.
So, what causes reflux in babies?
Reflux can be triggered by factors such as in utero experiences, birth, feeding positions, formula ingredients, teat type, mum's diet if breastfeeding, oral restrictions, allergies, or intolerances. Many babies I work with have more than one cause. Identifying the cause is essential for tailored solutions.
What you can do: Practical steps for parents
- Burping techniques: Burp your baby frequently to release trapped air
- Monitor allergens: Consider potential allergens or intolerances that may be contributing to symptoms
- View a day through the eyes of your baby: When are they in discomfort? Are feeds at certain times of the day worse than others? Can you identify what may be different during these times and feeds?
- Infant massage: This is a great tool to help move trapped wind out of your baby’s gut and help them feel more comfortable
- Seek expert help: Traditional advice and medications aren’t sadly ever the answer. I offer 1:1 Support and Group Support, where parents can learn the root cause of their baby’s discomfort, effective strategies, share experiences, and feel truly supported

I understand the challenges of caring for a baby with reflux. My son suffered for 10 months and we reached out to every person we could think of on the NHS and privately. I know none of these people had the training to help us and I spent months wasting time, money, my sanity, and quality time with my son.
My group support sessions provide a welcoming space to connect with other parents, gain practical insights, and feel empowered to advocate for your baby. You don’t have to navigate this journey alone—let me help you find lasting relief for your baby.
Reflux, silent reflux, colic, and any form of discomfort in your baby is NEVER normal, and you deserve answers. Understanding this is the first step to getting you both to a place of good.
My inbox in always open so feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns and I will always reply as soon as possible.
