Baby's first Christmas

Written by Jen Dowding | Nov 27, 2025 11:00:00 AM

There’s something truly magical about your baby’s first Christmas. The fairy lights, the cosy jumpers, the smell of mince pies in the air, it’s a season full of wonder. And while your little one may not remember the day, you certainly will!

Whether you’re planning a quiet Christmas at home or gathering with extended family for a proper festive do, here are some lovely ways to make your baby’s first Christmas extra special, without the stress.

Start a family tradition

Baby's first Christmas is the perfect time to start a family tradition you can enjoy for years to come. Keep it simple and meaningful by reading a special Christmas Eve book, wearing matching family pyjamas, or by making a bauble using your little one's tiny footprint.

Traditions like these grow with your child and will become a treasured part of every December.

Capture the magic with no pressure

Don’t worry about getting the perfect photo, just aim to capture the joy. Here are some sweet ideas:

  • Baby looking up at the Christmas tree
  • A snap of your little one in a festive outfit or hat (reindeer antlers, anyone?)
  • A family selfie in front of the fireplace or twinkling lights

Remember, candid moments are often the most precious.

Keep gifts thoughtful and manage expectations

Babies honestly don’t need much, and half the time, they prefer the wrapping paper anyway! A few lovely gift ideas might include:

  • A keepsake item, like a personalised blanket or wooden toy
  • A first Christmas book with a message inside
  • A soft toy or sensory play item

If family and friends ask what to get, don’t be afraid to suggest practical gifts, experiences or contributions to a Junior ISA or premium bonds. It’s all about balance.

Include baby in the festivities

Your baby may not understand what’s going on, but they’ll love being part of the action. Keep them close while:

  • Watching classic Christmas films (The SnowmanPaddingtonThe Gruffalo’s Child)
  • Listening to carols or festive tunes
  • Wrapping presents or baking mince pies

Even something as simple as lying under the Christmas tree lights or having a little boogie to Slade can bring big smiles.

Make a Christmas keepsake

This year is the beginning of your family’s festive story together, so mark it with something lasting:

  • A “Baby’s First Christmas” bauble with their name and year
  • A scrapbook page or digital photo album
  • A letter to your baby about your hopes, memories, and love this Christmas

One day, they’ll be old enough to read it, and it’ll mean the world.

Take the pressure off

The first year of parenting is no walk in the park. Add in Christmas madness, and it can quickly feel overwhelming. So here’s your permission to do less.

You don’t need to host, decorate perfectly, or buy dozens of gifts. What your baby needs most is your time, your love, and a bit of calm in the chaos. If all you do is cuddle up with a cuppa while your baby naps in a festive baby grow, that’s a festive win.

One day your baby will look back at the photos and stories from their first Christmas and feel the love that surrounded them. Not because of expensive presents or elaborate plans, but because you were there, soaking in every moment.

Here’s to a beautiful first Christmas, full of cuddles, fairy lights, and mince pie crumbs.
